Increased Diabetes Risk with Higher Meat Intake

Sharon Palmer

More and more research suggests cutting meat intake for optimal health. A new study from Singapore found that Chinese adults with the highest red meat and poultry intake were at an increased risk for type 2 diabetes after a mean follow-up of 10.9 years, though high fish and shellfish intake did not increase the risk. The findings in the American Journal of Epidemiology, based on 45,411 adults with a mean age of 55.2, showed that substituting one daily serving of red meat and poultry with fish or shellfish reduced diabetes risk by 26% and 22%, respectively.

Indeed, several studies have linked pescatarian diets (vegetarian diets with fish) with health benefits. I also recommend swapping animal proteins, such as beef and chicken, for plant proteins more often. For example, you can create a plant-based stir-fry (pictured above) with vegetables, whole grains, and tofu for a healthful alternative.
