Plant-Based Eating in Spokane

Sharon Palmer

Check out Sharon Palmer’s guide to enjoying the plant-powered eats in Spokane, WA.

The second biggest city in Washington, Spokane is a delightful town, with gorgeous outdoor art, historic buildings, a roaring river topped with picturesque bridges, outdoor gardens, craft beer and local wineries, and delicious farm-to-table, plant-based food. Located in Eastern Washington’s prairie land, this region has always been known for agriculture, primarily orchards and grains. In fact, my ancestors came from Minnesota to Spokane as some of the first European settlers in the region, which celebrated rich Native American traditions at one time. I just got back from a fabulous trip to Spokane. Check out my guide to enjoying the plant-powered eats in this beautiful part of the world.

Palmer Homestead, Spokane Valley

I recently learned that part of my Palmer lineage moved from Minnesota to Spokane to become one of the first European settlers there. Here is a photo from an old history book, with the Palmer orchard. Isn’t it lovely?

Saranac Public House

Our first night included a stop at downtown hotspot Saranac. I just love this philosophy at restaurants, don’t you?

Veggie Burger, Saranac Public House

I had the most amazing hand-made veggie burger with chickpeas, smoked vegan cheese, and a cabbage slaw. I saved half in my room to eat for breakfast the next day.

Vegan Mac & Cheese, Saranac Public House

This creamy, rich mac & cheese was just plain yummy.

Downtown

A really cute space, with shops, restaurants, bars, and art galleries.

Downtown

This kind of speaks to the vibe of Spokane.

We went for a long walk through Spokane, noticing so much of the beautiful outdoor art, such as this installation recognizing local runners.

Garden Food Co-Op

This adorable co-op is right downtown, and offers a wonderful selection of local, organic, plant-based foods.

Boots Bakery & Lounge

This is an entirely vegan bakery shop! It not only has delicious baked goods, but the cute restaurant offers a wonderful café menu of breakfast and lunch items.

Aren’t these rice puddings pretty?

Here’s the deli case, filled with vegan salads and dishes. You can order them ala carte or as a trio, picking out three you like. So flavorful and delicious!

Brain Freeze Ice Cream Vegan Ice Cream

We tried this local ice cream shop, which had 4 vegan, plant-based flavors on the menu. The raspberry, pistachio, chocolate cup was ridiculous. In fact, Peter (who came with me on this trip) went back and got it two more times over the course of a two day trip!

Davenport Hotel

This is a really beautiful, historic hotel, which has undergone renovation to restore its original grandeur.

Rivers Wish Animal Sanctuary

I spent a few hours at the amazing farm animal sanctuary, getting to know some of their adopted animals, such as this cute pig.

Allie’s Vegan Pizza

Such a treat to eat at Allie’s Vegan Pizza at the end of our whirlwind day of sightseeing. The entire menu is 100% plant-based, including an array of great flavors, like this Hot Mess vegan pizza which has mac & cheese, onions, and spicy sauce.

KREM2TV Morning Show, CBS affiliate

I stopped by the Spokane morning TV show to talk about the Veg Fest with my colleague Josh Meckel, who organizes the Veg Fest.

Spokane Veg Fest

The reason I was in town is because I spoke at the Spokane Veg Fest. It comes each year in the summer, so plan your trip to Spokane in order to take this in. You’ll have a whole day of good food, fun, and learning more about plant-based eating.

Spokane Veg Fest

I spoke and did a cooking demo on plant-based eating.

Full Circle, Spokane Veg Fest

Fun to check out the expo at Veg Fest, which included this wonderful local service that delivers fresh, local food to your door.

Spokane Edible Tree Project, Spokane Veg Fest

Love this organization, which utilizes local food, which might go unused, to feed the hungry.

If you find yourself in Spokane, make sure to take time to go for a walk in the city, eat some really good plant-based grub, drink some local beer or wine, and visit the countryside.
