Oil Mister To the Rescue
I’m a fan of my trusty oil mister for many reasons. First of all, my little mister contains no “mystery ingredients” or genetically modified oils. I get to choose what kind of oil I’m spraying—such as my favorite extra virgin olive oil. I can apply just a little bit of olive oil at a time, which can certainly cut back on the amount of olive oil—and fat and calories—that comes pouring out of the bottle at times. And by swapping a throw-away aerosol can for a reusable container filled with heart healthy oil, I’m making a good choice for my health and the environment. A mister offers a healthy way to add more natural flavor and nutrients, with less fat, to any dish.
I never use bottled salad dressings. I’m inspired by the salad traditions of Italy, where a cruet of olive oil and balsamic vinegar sits at every restaurant table. You simply drizzle a bit of each over your salad for such a fresh, simple taste. However, those cruets can dispense more olive oil than I want at times. So, a mister is a good solution. You simply fill it with your favorite oil, and then pump it before you spray to coat your salad with just the right amount of oil. It can also be used on breads, vegetables or pasta, and to coat cookie sheets and pans for cooking or baking.
A mister is easy to use, inexpensive, and very simple to clean because it is dishwasher friendly. To get the longest shelve life; store your mister in the cupboard away from the stove or a window.
Here are my favorite tips for using an oil mister.
Tips for Using an Oil Mister
1. Fill your mister with a high-quality oil, such as extra virgin olive oil or expeller pressed, organic canola oil.
2. Store it in a cool, dark place to maintain freshness.
3. Clean it out thoroughly before refilling.
4. Spritz your salad with the mister to give it just enough healthy olive oil, instead of drenching it with dressing.
5. If you bake breads, you can use the mister to spray the tops instead of using an oil brush.
6. Spray veggies before placing on the grill.
7. Mix oil, vinegar, and any spices into an oil mister for a homemade salad dressing or marinade.
8. Spray waffle irons, baking sheets, loaf pans, and casserole dishes to avoid food sticking to pans.
