Poor Diet Increases Risk of Death
More and more research connects our daily eating style with risks of chronic diseases, which can shorten the quality and length of your life. A new study found that diets low in whole grains, fruit, nuts, and seeds and high in salt are linked to one in five deaths globally. Diabetes caused almost 1.5 million deaths in 2016, up from 31 percent in 2006, and obesity levels continue to rise. Other food related risk factors, which include high blood glucose, high blood pressure, high body mass index (BMI), and high total cholesterol, were in the top ten mortality risk factors for both men and women worldwide. The Global Burden of Disease study evaluates global health trends in 195 countries.
