Apple Filling:
- 5 medium apples (5 ounces each), peeled, cored, sliced
- ½ cup orange juice
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon brown sugar (optional)
Crumble Topping with Oats:
- 2/3 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1/3 cup white whole wheat flour
- 1/3 cup coarsely chopped walnuts
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1/4 cup soft vegan margarine spread (i.e., Earth’s Balance)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 F.
- To make filling: Toss apple slices, orange juice, cinnamon, 1 teaspoon brown sugar (optional) together, and arrange in a 10-inch pie dish.
- To make crumble topping with oats: In a medium mixing bowl, stir together oats, flour, walnuts, cinnamon and brown sugar. Mix in margarine spread with a fork or pastry blender and your hands to make a crumbly dough.
- Sprinkle crumble topping over apple filling.
- Place dish in the oven and bake for about 45 minutes, until topping is golden brown and apples are tender yet firm.
- Remove from oven and serve while warm. Cover and store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to five days.
Notes
Make a gluten free apple crumble by substituting gluten-free flour for the white whole wheat flour.
Substitute apples for any type of fruit, such as peaches, apricots, berries, and pears.
